At Silver Gate Lodging, you should expect to find nature staring you in the face instead of your phone screen. Our location is designed to encourage guests to disconnect from their devices and reconnect with the natural world. While we are happy to be ‘mostly’ off the grid, we understand that for some, complete disconnection is difficult. For those guests, we do have satellite internet service available in our common area. However, there is no internet in our cabins, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings without distractions. The download speed may be slower than what you’re used to, but the tranquility and beauty of the area are worth it.

Our story started with our founder Henry Finkbeiner, a nature lover who was searching for a place to unplug, relax, and escape the chaos of everyday life. Henry was introduced to the wonders of national parks by his grandfather, who took him through Silver Gate via the Beartooth Pass on their journey to Yellowstone National Park. It was during this trip that Henry first fell in love with the stunning vistas and the wild beauty of the area. He recalls the moment vividly—standing in awe of the majestic mountains and the vast, open skies that seemed to stretch on forever. This experience ignited a passion for nature that would shape his future.

Henry’s memories of Silver Gate didn’t just stop at the breathtaking views. He began to appreciate the rich wildlife that thrived in the region, particularly in Lamar Valley. Known as the Serengeti of America, this valley is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, where one can witness bison roaming freely, bears foraging for food, and wolves howling in the distance. Each visit deepened his connection to this remarkable landscape and fostered a desire to share it with others.

As Henry grew older, this love for nature and wildlife sparked an idea that would change his life. He realized that many young people might never have the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature as he did with his grandfather. With the fast-paced digital world encroaching on the lives of youth, he felt a strong urge to create an environment where they could reconnect with the outdoors. Determined to make this vision a reality, Henry set out to find the perfect location. He was committed to establishing a retreat that would allow young individuals to experience the beauty of the outdoors firsthand. After much searching, a listing for cabins for sale in Silver Gate caught his eye. Instantly, he recognized the charming town he had visited as a child, and he knew he had to explore this opportunity further. With a realtor by his side, he made plans to visit the area and see the cabins for himself.

What started as the purchase of a couple of cabins quickly blossomed into a larger endeavor. As Henry fell in love with the town and its surroundings, he expanded his vision to include multiple cabins, several houses, and even a hotel. This growth was fueled by his passion for providing others with a chance to experience the magic of Silver Gate. The community welcomed him with open arms, and he was determined to share this hidden gem with the world while maintaining its innocence and seclusion.

First, it was the purchase of a couple of cabins and then before long it quickly turned into multiple cabins, a couple of houses, and even a hotel. We just fell in love with this little town and decided to share this with the world and still keep it innocent and hidden from the crowds.

The Range Riders Lodge, a key part of this vision, became the perfect venue for hosting young adventurers eager to explore the great outdoors. This marked the beginning of annual camps for kids, where they could learn about nature, engage in outdoor activities, and develop lifelong friendships. As the years went by, the program evolved, adapting to the needs of older teens. Mentoring programs were introduced, allowing teens to spend their summer holidays in Silver Gate, gaining valuable experience in the hospitality industry and learning how to manage the cabins. This hands-on approach provided them with skills that would benefit them for years to come.

During their time off, these young individuals are encouraged to explore the park and its surrounding beauty. With so much to see and do, they can hike breathtaking trails, observe wildlife in their natural habitats, and discover the tranquility that comes with being immersed in nature. The experiences and memories created during these summers are invaluable, shaping their views on the environment and the importance of conservation.
